10,747 houses flooded in Karawang, Indonesia

High precipitation in the West Java Province, Indonesia has brought flooding to the Karawang District since March 20, 2010.

Initial reports of the damage indicate:

10,747 houses have been flooded
11,540 families have been affected
44,071 persons affected

The government has issued two weeks of an emergency relief period (Mar 20 to April 4) to provide assistance to the nine subdistricts impacted (Karawang Barat, Karawang Timur, TelukJambe Barat, TelukJambe Timur, Klari, Rengasdengklok, Cibuaya, Batujaya, and Pakisjaya)

The HOPE worldwide team left this morning bringing some first aid and clothing assistance as well as to assess the damage and needs on the ground. The four member team is coordinating with local government, the National Disaster Management Agency, and the Ministry of Health.

The Assessment report will determine what steps are to be taken for the people impacted in the near future. Considering the high water level at three dams in the areas (Jatiluhur, Cirata, Saguling), there is a high chance that more water will be released into the Citarum river to reduce the pressure that the water is creating. With low altitude of impacted areas where rice fields are spread out, the initial fear is that the water will take time to recede. The worst case scenario is that damage to one of the dams can cause a greater humanitarian need for the District with a 2 million population.

In Indonesia, our programs have benefitted over a million people in the last 16 years of service in over 13 provinces where 15 Centers of HOPE are serving. Tsunami, earthquakes, floods, landslide has continuously impact the country as climate change, urbanization, and forest degradation have bring their toll.
